A is for Artic Foxes

  An Artic Fox Story
By: Allison

Drip, drip, drop, Spring woke to the scent of fresh water on her nose. The young kit shook her head, making the waterfall off her white, snowy muzzle. Spring jumped to her paws excitedly. She could barely make out the outline of her sister’s glacier white fur.
Spring nosed her sister encouragingly. “Wake up! wake up!”
Drifty’s fur moved. “Whyyyyyy” she whined.
Spring grasped her sisters scruff and pulled with all her might. She managed to lift Drifty’s front body a feet inches but then she fell to the snow again. Spring heard a noise from outside. She peered through the exit from the snow burrow. Two icy blue eyes stared back at her with snowy fur.
“Mom!” Spring leapt back, making way for the bigger copy of her.
The adult arctic fox lept in the burrow, making snow whish around from her fur. Drifty opened one eye to look at what was happening. She bounced to her feet eagerly glaring at the brown bundle that was on the ground.
“I brought breakfast” she smiled at us. “Soon I’ll teach you how to scavenge for food”
“Really?” Drifty and Spring said in unison.
“Of course” Alaska, their mother bit into the lemmings she caught into pieces for the young foxes. Drifty was the exact copy of Alaska and Spring was like Alaska’s sister. Alaska’s sister was named Artix. She had light gray fur and white fur mixed together to make a icy mix. They all ate happily until full. The small family played until sunset and they all fell asleep.
The next day, Spring woke early, as usual, but something was different about her. Her fur now was a mix of browns and grays. instead of snowy fur, she had wet fur. Not only that, Spring, Drifty, and Alaska’s fur was sleek and thin for warm temperatures. The dirt colored kit jumped on her sister.
“Wake up NOW!” She nipped her sister awake with her little thorn sharp teeth.
“Stop, Stop! I’m awake!” Drifty struggled to her paws sore from her sister’s jaws.
“Look at ourselves!” Spring yelped. “We look gross!”. Suddenly their mother stood up and stretched her stiff limbs.
“Spring is here, and that means lots of food” Spring tilted her head confused.
“Of course I’m here” Alaska’s tail twitched. “Not you, she its like Winter but warmer”
The kits nodded. “ I’ll teach you how to hunt, let’s go” She climbed out into the sun with her kits following.
